How it works

Four unhurried steps.

The intro consultation is designed to be low-pressure and genuinely useful — whether or not you ever become a client. Here’s exactly what to expect.

Schedule your meeting

Call us or request a time online. The intro consultation runs about 45 minutes and is completely complimentary — no cost, and no obligation to become a client. We meet at our downtown Seattle office or by video call, whichever suits you.

We listen first

There’s no pitch. We ask about your goals, your family, what’s working, and what’s keeping you up at night — whether that’s retirement timing, equity comp from a Seattle tech role, education funding, or simply wanting a second set of eyes on your plan.

We explain how we work

We walk you through our fee-only, fiduciary model in plain language — how we’re paid, how we invest, and how the ongoing planning relationship works. You’ll leave understanding exactly what engaging Meridian would look like.

You decide — no pressure

If we’re a good fit, we outline next steps. If we’re not, we’ll say so and point you toward resources that serve you better. Either way, you leave with a clearer picture of your situation than you arrived with.

What we’ll discuss

  • Your goals — retirement timing, work-optional flexibility, and what “enough” looks like for your family
  • Equity compensation — RSUs, stock options, and concentrated-position risk common among Seattle tech professionals
  • Education funding — 529 plans and how they fit alongside your other priorities
  • Tax strategy — Roth conversion questions, tax-efficient withdrawals, and coordination with your CPA
  • Your current accounts — 401(k)s, IRAs, brokerage, and any old plans from past employers
  • How our fee-only, fiduciary relationship would work on an ongoing basis

What to bring

  • Recent statements for your investment and retirement accounts (a summary is fine)
  • Your most recent tax return, if it’s handy — it tells us a lot about your situation
  • A rough sense of your income, savings rate, and monthly expenses
  • Any equity-comp documents — grant summaries or vesting schedules
  • Questions you’ve been meaning to ask an advisor — bring the whole list
  • Nothing at all is also fine — we can start with a conversation and gather details later

FAQ

Before you book.

Is the consultation really free?
Yes. The initial consultation is complimentary and carries no obligation. It’s a discovery conversation — a chance for you to learn how we work and for us to understand your situation. You won’t be charged anything, and you won’t be pressured to become a client. If we’re not the right fit for each other, we’ll tell you honestly and point you toward resources that serve you better.
What actually happens in the meeting?
We spend the first part listening — about your goals, your family, your accounts, and what prompted you to reach out. Then we explain how Meridian works: our fee-only structure, our fiduciary duty, and how the ongoing planning relationship is set up. We answer your questions in plain language. The goal is for you to leave with a clearer understanding of your financial picture and a genuine sense of whether we’re a good match — not to sign paperwork on the spot.
Do I need to bring anything?
Nothing is required. That said, if you’d like the conversation to be more specific, recent account statements and your most recent tax return are the two most useful things to have on hand. They help us understand your accounts, your tax situation, and where planning opportunities might exist. If you’d rather just talk first and share documents later, that’s completely fine — we meet you where you are.
Will you tell me what to invest in during the consultation?
The intro consultation is about understanding your situation and explaining how we work — not delivering specific investment recommendations. As a fiduciary, any advice we give is grounded in a full understanding of your goals, accounts, and circumstances, which takes more than one meeting to build. We can’t and won’t promise particular returns; what we offer is a disciplined, evidence-based process. If you decide to engage us, detailed recommendations come during the formal planning phase.
What happens after the consultation if we decide to work together?
The next step is a deeper discovery meeting where we review your accounts, tax returns, and financial documents in detail. From there we build your financial plan and, if applicable, an investment strategy aligned to your goals and risk tolerance. We formalize the relationship with a written advisory agreement and our Form ADV disclosures, so you know exactly what you’re paying and what you’re getting before anything begins.
I already have an advisor — is it worth meeting anyway?
Many of our clients came to us for a second opinion and stayed because they valued the fee-only, fiduciary difference. A complimentary consultation is a low-stakes way to compare. We’re happy to review how your current portfolio is constructed, what you’re paying in fund and advisory fees, and whether your plan still fits your goals. If your current advisor is serving you well, we’ll say so — there’s no downside to a second set of eyes.
